Had a very similar problem to this - updates stuck on the 'Checking for Updates' spinning icon. Reboot failed to fix problem. Because I am a newbie, much of what was said above seemed difficult, so I thought I'd just try the one thing I could actually find on my machine, which was to. To update apps purchased or downloaded from the Mac App Store, open the App Store app and click on Updates. For apps not purchased from the Mac App Store, the way to check for updates varies.

If I force quit and restart the App Store no content is loaded, and the navigation menu (featured, top charts, etc.) is grayed out. I have to restart the computer for the app store to become responsive again, but it still crashes after I navigate to the 'updates' tab.

As a result of this issue I cannot install OS X updates.

The only troubleshooting I have done so far is to repair disk permissions and look in the Console for possible errors (nothing jumped out at me, but I didn't really know what to look for.)

Any advice on how I might resolve this issue?

Preliminary Measures

Before performing any system update, be sure to create a backup of your sensitive data. You have two options to back up your Mac: Time Machine or a third-party Mac backup tool. 1. Start your Mac, then immediately press and hold down the Shift key.
2. Release the key when you see the login window.
3. Your Mac will now boot into Safe Mode, where you can fix your issue.

Step #4: Reset the NVRAM

If the problem is still present, try resetting the NVRAM. The Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM) is a memory section that your Mac uses to store specific settings like screen resolution and volume settings.

To reset the NVRAM, follow the steps below:
