Below you'll find the basic information you need to know about the DMV point system in California along with common violations that could result in a suspension of your driver's license.

Second only to the issuessurrounding tattooing and tattoo removal, the hardest decision oneever has to make is, upon moving to California and buying aconvertible, what personalized license plate should one get? In thepast, this was a slow and embarrassing process, requiring one to goto the Motor Vehicles office, shuffle up to the clerk, and meeklyrequest 'HOTBABE,' only to receivethe crushing news that someone else has, somehow, already thought ofthat and taken it as her own personalized license plate. While thereare 66,220,518,000 possible combinations,[2] it is apparently a devoted pursuit ofthe state's 30-odd million residents to think ofpersonalized license plates. As with Internet domain names, if youcan think of it, someone probably already has it.

  1. In the United States, the appearance of license plates is frequently chosen to contain symbols, colors, or slogans associated with the issuing jurisdiction, which are the 50 U. California currently only uses I, O, and Q in between two other.
  2. California absolutely does use the letter O. It is never used as the first or last character in a series of letter on standard-issue plates. The format for normal passenger vehicle plates is one.

[2] This isbased on the formula: $c+=35**$_-10**$_for2.7;print$c;. (The 35 is because letter O is treated asdigit zero. The 10 is because all-digit plates are notallowed.)

But now the California Department of Motor Vehicles has understoodour plight, and has put up the web site plates.ca.gov so that we can sit at home anduse the Web to see which of our license plate ideas is available. Ithas a simple HTML form interface, shown in Figure 5-2.

Figure 5-2. California License Plate Search

However, it's so draining to have to plant the mousein the search box, type 'PL8DV8' orwhatever other license plate you want, mouse over to the submitbutton and press it, see the next screen report either'Plate configuration PL8DV8 isunavailable' or 'this plate istentatively acceptable and available,' then mouseover to the Back button, press it, and so on for every possibilitythat occurs to us. Just as a true power user would never use the webinterface to whois but would instead insist onthe command-line tool, we too would be happiest with a command-lineinterface to this license plate search form.

5.5.1. The Form

Viewing the source of the search form at http://plates.ca.gov/search/ shows that, omitting some table-formatting codes, it really just consists of:

From what we learned earlier about how different kinds of formelements produce different kinds of pairs, we can deduce that filling'PL8DV8' in thetype=text box, then pressing the'Check Plate Availability' buttonwill cause two form pairs to be submitted:plate=PL8DV8 and search=Check PlateAvailability.

In each case, the first part of the form pair comes from theelement's name attribute. Withthe first pair, we follow the rule for text input elements, and getthe value from whatever the user has typed intothat box (or whatever is there by default). With either submitbutton, we follow the rule for type=submitelements and make a form pair from the valueattribute (if there is such an attribute and if this is the buttonthat the user is pressing in order to submit the form).

5.5.2. Use formpairs.pl

We can save a local copy of theform's HTML source and edit the formelement's action attribute topoint to some server where we've set up as a CGI theformpairs.pl program from earlier in thischapter. The form element will then read:

If we then open the local copy of the form in our browser, fill in'PL8DV8' in the search box, and hitthe first Submit button, formpairs.pl willreport:

Our idea of what form pairs get sent was correct! (The second buttonwould predictably send a 'search' value of'SeeExistingSimilarPlates', but thatfunction is outside the scope of our interest.)

5.5.3. Translating This into LWP

Simply put that list of form pairs into a call to$browser->post(url,pairs_arrayref).Specifically, the call will look like this:

Knowing this, it's simple to write code that takesan argument from the command line and puts it into$plate, performs the above POST request, thenchecks the response. Example 5-3 is the completeprogram.

Saved into pl8.pl, it runs happily from thecommand line:

  • Refusing a test for drugs or alcohol.

    • 3 points within 12 months.
    • A traffic conviction and fail to pay the required fines.
  • Restricted for 30 days if you receive 2 points within 12 months.
  • Suspended for 1 year for the use of alcohol or drugs.
    • Penalty is for individuals between the ages of 13 and 21 years old.

Common CA DMV Point Violations

For convicted traffic infractions, drivers will have points placed on their driver license record depending on the severity of the infraction. Note that if you are driving a commercial vehicle when you are cited, the points are worth 1 1/2 times the standard point amount.

  • Avoid adding points to your record.
  • Potentially earn an auto insurance discount.

Make sure to check with the traffic school about specific details on how passing a course could help you clear your record.

How to Check CA Driver's License Points

Whenever you need or want to check the status of your California driver's license, you can order a driving record report. From time to time it's smart to verify that your driver's license is in good standing and that no errors have been made on your driving record.
