I was using Palm Desktop (version 2.6.3) under Mac OS 9 and migrated to iCal under Mac OS X by way of Palm Desktop (version 4.2.1) under Mac OS X. (In retrospect, I don't think it was helpful to migrate through version 4.2.1.

If you follow down that Macintouch thread, you'll see other people report that they're still able to synchronize with 10.6.4.
I'm very interested in this topic myself. I waited a long time until I'd convinced myself that Palm Desktop would work with 10.6 before I migrated. I'd feel severely bummed if I could no longer use Palm syncing and Pocket Quicken with Quicken 2007. Don't get me started on 'Quicken Essentials for Mac'.

I haven't tested this hint, since I don't use Palm any more. However, you should be aware that the items in the ByHost preferences folder have the computer's MAC address as part of their name. Therefore, you will have to modify the three ByHost prefs filenames to match your hardware by replacing '0030656cef6a' with your computer's MAC address.

It's really just a problem with Palm's installer attempting to do sudo-like things before (or maybe after, I can't remember) it has authorization from the user... I posted instructions that should get you going without the above ballet here:

(essentially, you have to launch the installer as a superuser... stupid, I know... but tell that to palm.)
I have read a lot about users having problems installing Palm Desktop on various version of OS X - personally I have never had those problems. I think part of it is caused due to NOT using the latest version of the installer (4.2.1 is the latest I think).
Palm have released version B of the 4.2.1 installer that apparently is taking care of some Tiger problems - I had no problem re-installing with my 'old' 4.2.1 installer after I got the same symptoms as mentioned in this article after I had 'Archived and Install' my Tiger ;-)
But those newer (post 4.0) Palm desktop installers that work on Tiger do not support older devices, like Visors and older Treos.
That means because they made mistakes and refuse to fix them, I have to buy a new Palm to make it work with my new laptop.
I don't think I will be buying anymore Palm devices.
Hello all Mac Freaks and peeps, most these palm install issues are permissions related, log in as root and or fix your permissions. Last and more specifically, check your palm hot sync folder permissions in your root library folder, change them to wide open rwrw for all, now iSync can actually install the apple/isync conduit. Hope that helps, I know I was frustrated by this until i discovered this workaround.
One thing that people haven't pointed out but became obvious reading the above messages:If you have partitioned your hard drive (as I have) and tend to install applications on a partition separate from Tiger you WILL have these problems.
Palm Desktop 4.2.1
The Palm installer allows you to install Palm Desktop anywhere you choose (rather than limiting you to your Tiger partition, as it should) it will install important system files on the partition you choose which in my case did not contain Tiger. So naturally, Palm desktop would 'throw up' when I tried a hotsync operation.
Make absolutely sure that you are installing to the Applications Folder on your Tiger partition, otherwise you will experience all the same 'permission problems' outlined above.
BTW, if you are using Missing Sync, you should re-install it once you have working Palm Desktop/Hotsync combination.
I hope this helps others as I spent a hell of a lot of time trying to get my Palm to work with Tiger. It seems obvious now, but no where have I seen this explained.
After 2 days of debugging, the solution to get my Palm V synching on Mac PowerBook running 10.3.9 (Panther) using the Palm Desktop didn't require any hacks. (I tested it on 2 separate systems.)
0. Log in using an account that has 'Administration' privledges.
1. Install any drivers that came with your USB-to-Serial adapter/cable.
In my case, it was a USB 2.0 to Serial Adapter (USB-2920) from www.cablesunlimited.com. The drivers came on a tiny CD-ROM which a Mac cannot swallow and spit out. Therefore, I needed to go to a Windows PC to copy the archive image to Desktop and email the contents to my Mac using Gmail. You will need to get the drivers onto your Mac is the lesson here.
2. Download Palmâ„¢ Desktop software for Mac
a. Go to, http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/mac_desktop.html
b. Enter in your Palm model & Mac OS version
Mine happens to be Palmâ„¢ Desktop 4.2.1 rev A for Mac (Palm V device)
c. Fill out the little form with your <name>, etc. and download image to your desktop (.sit).
3. Make sure you have the latest version of Stuffit before you unarchive this image. I had Stuffit 7.x and the latest is 10.x. If you do not, your install image will be incomplee and you will get this error upon completion of the install: Install did not complete successfully, 'Retry' or 'Quit'.
If you already installed using the faulty Palm Desktop image, you can install it by reruning the same faulty installation image. Just rerun the Installation again, this time when you see 'Easy Install', change it to 'Uninstall' and proceed. This will remove your bogus installation.
Now delete your old Palm Desktop installer image, recreate a new Palm Desktop Installer image using the latest version (Ver. 10.x) of Stuffit. Rerun the new Palm Desktop Installer, this time you should successfully make it through without errors.
4. Go ahead and try a hotsync. If you get a 'Terminal Manager not found' error, you need to first call up HotSync Manager, enable Hotsync (instead of Disable) in the 'HotSync Controls' tab and then go to the 'Connection Settings' tab to make sure your usbserial connection checkbox is selected.
5. If your Palm device is barking at you, your Palm may be configured to sync usinig the network instead of your Serial (USB) connection. This is no problem. You should be presented with a choice of Local sync, 1 or Network sync. Select Local and begin your sync again by hitting the sync button on the cradle.
In summary, make sure you have the hardware right plus any drivers to support the hw. After that, no hacking required. Just make sure you have current version of Stuffit. If you don't have it, download it FREE. See above.
